App or Mobile Website?

Answer a few questions below to see what is best for you.

Do you have a mobile website?

If not, you should start there before an app. If you do then we need to figure out what we want people to do in the app. Here are a few questions to ask.

  • Do you already have blogs, postcasts, and events?
  • Do you already have giving?
  • Will you be able to do those things in the new app?

If you answered yes to any of the above than an App could work for you. If you don't have these basics features then you either need to look at a solution that includes them and has a way to get them back on your website or perhaps look at building a website that has these features so that we can use them in the app.

Do you need Push Notifications?

Yes? Then it has to be an App. Because apps run on your user's devices you will be able to send them notifications that open up the app. If used correctly, this could be a great way to keep your members informed. Here are some common use cases.

  • A special announcement about an upcoming event could open the app with the event details.
  • If you have to cancel service for weather or anything like that a push notification would alert your congregation.
  • You've just uploaded the weekend's sermon and you want to let your members know about it. Send a push notification. This will open the app for them to listen.

Benefits of an App over a Website.

  • Brand recognition is one of the main reasons. Every time someone is on their phone they will see your logo and think of your organization. You can't get that with a website.
  • Notifications
  • Easier to give. All of your information is already saved so giving is just a click away.
  • Directly download sermons to devices
  • Offline information and service times
  • Tailored content. You are always logged in.

Benefits of a Website over an App.

A website is a must. We aren't debating these as one or the other. Your website should do everything that your app does. The App just gives you the ability to notify people in a way that you can't via the website.

If you don't currently have a mobile website, you need to start here before you go down the app road.
